A Few Good Things | August 2023 Edition

Welcome to the first edition of The Good Place Institute's newsletter! You are receiving this because we value your relationship, we've connected at some point, or we think you're a like-minded individual who wants to build and steward organizations that thrive. Once a month, we promise to deliver ‘A Few Good Things’ in a brief, value-packed, and easy-to-read format without adding more clutter to your inbox. Thank you for being awesome and making the world a better place.

It is estimated that the Bible is the best-selling book of all time with approximately 5 billion copies sold and distributed worldwide! The Bible, including its principles and values, has been used as the foundation of the most sustainable and successful governments and has shaped societies and cultures around the world for centuries, specifically Western civilization and culture. Its words have changed the world and individual lives. It can change our workplaces too.

The Bible and the storyline throughout defines what is good and describes what is good—it also describes good places. And when you apply the principles and values of God’s Word today, what is produced is also good and a good place.

When you apply the principles of God’s Word and the Bible to the life of an organization you are leading and how you are leading it, the result is good and what you are building is a Good Place.

"Leadership is a role to serve."

— The Good Place Organization: A Leader’s Guide to Stewarding Good Place Organizations (page 81)

The Good Place Institute was approached by a small yet successful business seeking assistance with founder/owner succession planning. The initial conversation involved answering a couple of fundamental questions about the purpose of the organization and succession plan. Read the full client story on how the leadership team engaged in the succession planning process.

What are "the words at the top" of your organization?

Whatever those words are is what will define the purpose mission, vision, values, and inspiration of the organization. At The Good Place Institute, we call those words "The Charter."

The Charter is what gives direction, sets the tone, shapes culture, brings unity and alignment, settles disputes, creates clarity, and provides inspiration.

The words at the top matter.

So, what are the words at the top of your organization, and are they contributing to building and stewarding a Good Place?
