Happy Thanksgiving! Welcome to the November edition of A Few Good Things with Chris Young! This month, I have five things that I wanted to pass on to you that I hope you’ll find valuable. Thank you for reading and being a part of The Good Place Institute community.

What does a successful leader look like in a Good Place organization? In short, a successful leader serves the organization to ensure that the Charter (the embodiment of purpose, vision, mission, values, and inspiration) is being fulfilled and the three aims are being accomplished—the organization values people, positively impacts and benefits the communities it serves, and is economically regenerative.


A successful leader in a Good Place organization embodies and builds a culture where Biblical principles and values are applied and lived out. Those principles and values look like leaders sharing the vision, investing in diverse people, building authentic relationships, developing peoples’ potential, unifying around a plan, equipping and empowering others, utilizing gifts, modeling accountability, and having a succession plan.

At a Good Place organization, leadership is not about external reward, popularity, or influence for selfish gain. Leadership is about stewardship and sacrifice. It’s about serving—serving people and a greater purpose. Because of this, leadership starts with character. 

The Bible also has a lot to say about our character. Some traits that come to mind are humility, integrity, generosity, wisdom, competence, emotional intelligence, unifier, accountability, and empathy. It is interesting that these traits—and many others we find in God’s Word about leadership—show up in business leadership books, at least when looking at leaders whose organizations define success in more purposeful, meaningful, and fulfilling ways. 


Ultimately, the purpose of leadership is to steward the organization, serve people, and determine how the organization fulfills its purpose. Leadership ensures the health of the organization by stewarding the growth and development of the members, taking care of the people of the organization, and managing the systems in which they work. When they do this, the organization thrives, people flourish, communities prosper, and the world becomes a better place.
