Josh Mitchell is part of our team at GPI. His primary role is Chief Marketing Officer at Good Place Holdings, and he has been my co-host on the Business is Good podcast.
Josh does a lot of things—one of those things is sailing.
Josh has been sailing with his family for years on Lake Erie. They are the kind of family that goes out on the water as much as possible. Next week, they are taking a vacation, and, you guessed it, they’ll be on the water.
I don’t know much about sailing, but I do know that wind is important. An old philosopher once said, “If a man knows not which port he sails, no wind is favorable.” Essentially, if you haven’t charted a destination, you’ll drift anywhere and everywhere but get nowhere.
You can say the same about your business or organization. If your organization has no clear purpose—a charted destination—no wind will be favorable. |
|
We must have a clear purpose because God is always purposeful. Within The Good Place Organization Operating System, we start with purpose, called The Charter.
The Charter embodies the characteristics of purpose, mission, vision, values, and inspiration of what the organization desires to be and do. It provides the “aim” of the entire organization and the direction we use to “chart” its course.
Much like Patrick Lencioni asks in his book The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business, the Charter answers the following:
-
Why does this organization exist?
-
What is this organization to achieve?
-
What unique benefits are we providing, and for whom?
-
How will the world be different because the organization exists?
-
In what areas should we direct our efforts for the organization’s growth?
-
What are the values of the organization that guide behavior and culture?
-
Who should be interested in joining this organization?
We can’t stress enough the value of having a Charter. It sets the tone, shapes culture, fosters unity, settles disputes, creates clarity, and provides inspiration. It is the “favorable wind.”
With a Charter in place, it is easy for members of the organization to take ownership and leaders to be held accountable for fulfilling it. How do we know if we’re fulfilling the Charter? I’ll answer that in the next newsletter when I share about the Key Outcomes and Results Dashboard. |

“I have worked with other similar platforms, and while they are all beneficial in alignment with goals and tasks, GPI just has an added element that sets it apart… I believe GPI was instrumental in helping us to center on not only what was important from a business standpoint but also what was important as a body of believers. I look forward to continuing to dive further into GPI, where I know we will see more success and company alignment. Thank you for being a trusted resource and for shepherding us so well along the way.”
