A Few Good Things with Chris Young

October Edition

Welcome to the October 2026 edition of A Few Good Things.

The Fruit Reveals the Tree

If you wanted to know whether a tree was healthy, you probably wouldn’t begin by examining its leaves. You would look at its fruit.

Healthy trees produce healthy fruit. Diseased trees produce unhealthy fruit. The fruit doesn’t create the tree; the tree produces the fruit.

Jesus used this picture to teach a timeless truth. Fruit reveals what is happening beneath the surface.

The same is true of organizations.

Every organization is producing fruit. It may be trust or distrust, collaboration or division, flourishing people or discouraged people. Whatever the fruit, it reveals something deeper about the health of the organization itself.

When leaders become frustrated with the fruit, the temptation is often to focus on what is most visible. We launch another initiative, introduce another program, or write another policy. While those efforts may have value, they rarely address the deeper issues that produced the fruit in the first place.

A better question is, What kind of tree is producing this fruit?

That question moves us beyond the visible outcomes and into the culture, leadership, and patterns that shape everyday life within an organization. It invites us to look beneath the surface and examine what is truly being cultivated.

This is where stewardship begins.

God is the Creator. He is the Designer. Everything He creates has purpose and is intended to flourish according to His design. As leaders, we have been entrusted with cultivating organizations that increasingly reflect that design. Stewardship is not simply responding to problems as they arise. It is faithfully shaping an organization that bears the kind of fruit God intended from the beginning.

Healthy organizations do not produce healthy fruit by accident. They produce it because they have been intentionally cultivated over time through faithful leadership, wise stewardship, and a commitment to God’s purposes.

If we want different fruit, we must be willing to examine the tree.

That is not always the easiest work, but it is the work that leads to lasting transformation. As leaders faithfully steward the health of the organization itself, the fruit begins to change as well.

Because in the end, the fruit will always reveal the tree.

Purposeful business. Flourishing people. Economic stewardship. That's the fruit of a healthy organization. Take this 5-minute assessment, and we'll help you tend the tree that grows it.

Examine Your Tree

Grub Night - Hope Church - Mason, OH - September 2026

What is the purpose of our work?

That was the question at the center of a great evening with the Men of Hope at Hope Church - Mason, OH

Chris Young, President of the Good Place Institute, joined the group for Grub Night to talk about “The Purpose of Work: The Why, What, and How” and what it looks like to more fully integrate our faith with the work we do every day.

Because our faith isn’t something we simply add to our work. It should shape why we work, what we’re working toward, and how we build, lead, and steward our organizations.

We’re grateful to Hope Church for the invitation and for a room full of men willing to wrestle with what work can look like when it reflects God’s purpose and design.

And, of course, for some pretty amazing BBQ!

Thanks to everyone who came out and took part in the conversation!

Good Place Institute at CBMC Merge 2026

Good Place Institute will exhibit at CBMC Merge 2026, October 8–10 in Columbus, Ohio.

Merge brings together Christian business leaders from across the country for three days focused on faith at work, prayer, discipleship, and sharing your faith. It’s an opportunity for leaders to be challenged and equipped to live out their faith more fully in the workplace.

If you’ll be attending Merge, we’d love for you to stop by the Good Place Institute exhibit, meet our team, and learn more about building and stewarding a Good Place Organization.

Thank you for checking out our newsletter. Our purpose at The Good Place Institute is to help leaders multiply Good Place organizations! We are thankful for you and your leadership of organizations to reflect God’s Kingdom!
