November Edition

Happy Thanksgiving! Welcome to the November edition of A Few Good Things.

Every year for as long as I can remember (and back to 1934, which is a little further back than I can remember 😊), the Detroit Lions have hosted an NFL football game on Thanksgiving Day! This year is no different. But, yet, it is a little different. This year, the Lions are among the leaders in their industry. With a record of 10-1, they have the best record in the NFL (tied with the Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs).

The Detroit Lions are one of the biggest storylines that everyone is talking about this season.

What has turned this franchise into an industry leader and a must-see this season?

In a phrase, I think it’s purposeful leadership.

From the owner to the GM to the head coach to the quarterback to the players, the Detroit Lions cast a vision to be the best team in the NFL. Everyone is aligned with that purpose, and their leadership is leading from that purpose all the way through the organization to the individual players. What is happening on the field is a reflection of their purpose-aligned leadership.

Although their purpose may not be Kingdom-oriented, it had me thinking about how Christian business leaders lead with purpose.

Many Christian business leaders we talk to face a similar challenge. They struggle to integrate God’s purpose into the organization’s design—aligning and integrating the purpose with how it functions operationally.

While we strive in our personal lives to reflect Christ and His principles and values, we are challenged to reflect His Kingdom in our organization. We want what we believe to reflect what is happening on the “field of play.”

A central question arises: "How do we get our business to reflect the Kingdom?"

This is where a biblical approach to managing systems can make a profound difference—something we’re all about at The Good Place Institute. Integrating our faith into practical systems management can address our pain points while stewarding the organization toward deeper purpose and impact.

The Pain of Leadership Misalignment & The Solutions We Need

In leading a business, common struggles often signal deeper systemic issues. Our faith-driven leadership, if implemented in practical ways, can help resolve the pain points we feel in these areas:

  1. Wasted Resources: Leaders may notice resources being misused or underutilized. This typically stems from inadequate monitoring systems that fail to provide clarity on stewardship.
SOLUTION: Monitor resources with a stewardship mindset.

  2. Unfocused Energy and Poor Teamwork: Teams can lack cohesion, leading to loose ends and diminished progress. At its root, this often reflects unclear roles and operations.
SOLUTION: Align and clarify roles and foster unity with purpose.

  3. Purpose Drift: Without systems tied to an overarching Charter, organizations risk losing sight of their purpose, resulting in stagnation, frustration, or distraction (or all of the above).
SOLUTION: Align and integrate your systems with your Charter

  4. Recurring Problems: Constant firefighting without progress stems from a lack of systems designed for continuous improvement.
SOLUTION: Embrace the cycle of learning and continuous improvement

Each solution involves implementing managing systems that reflect biblical principles of stewardship, clarity, and continuous growth. By addressing these pain points through a biblical perspective, Christian business leaders can transform their organizations into places of peace, purpose, and impact. It also fosters a culture of stewardship, critical thinking, and biblical problem-solving. This isn’t just about improving efficiency—it’s about creating an environment where God’s shalom is evident in every process and relationship.

So, the question remains: Is your business reflecting the Kingdom?

“I’ve seen workplace ministries run by businesspeople who are well-intentioned but don’t have a deep theological foundation for what they’re attempting, and I’ve seen theoretical academics who do not have the practical business know-how to implement their theology. What I see with The Good Place Institute is an organization that can do both.”

Faith, Business, and Investing Luncheon

On November 12th, The Good Place Institute attended a Faith, Business, and Investing Luncheon hosted by Three Corners Capital and Eventide Center for Faith. It was a great time with Christian business owners discussing impacting the Kingdom of God.

Thank you to Chris Flores, Jason Galyon, and everyone involved in the luncheon. We were excited to attend and contribute to the conversation.

Women, Work, & Calling Conference

Women in the workplace face unique challenges. At the annual Women, Work & Calling Conference, women from all over the country discovered a Lord and Savior in whom their talents, resources, and curiosity are welcome as members of the kingdom team.

GPI Partner Bob Robinson initiated and formed a team of women to host this event in Canton, Ohio, on November 1. This event from the Denver Institute for Faith & Work was hosted at 18 locations nationwide (with 1,300 in total attendance). In Canton, 40 women were encouraged to step into their callings and to lead in their organizations for the good of people and the flourishing of communities.
