A Few Good Things with Chris Young

2024

April Edition

Welcome to the April edition of A Few Good Things.

Within the WHY-WHAT-HOW rhythm of Good Place organizations, the WHY is fulfilled by “aiming” at what God cares about. However, to aim correctly, we must have the right target. That means we must define success within God’s economy, not the world’s.

The world’s idea of success revolves around earning money, fame, and influence as the sole purpose of business. Success in God’s economy—His Kingdom—is different and focuses on people and places designed to glorify God and experience shalom. Therefore, the WHAT in Good Place organizations is represented by three aims.

The WHAT of GPI

The Three Aims of Good Place Organizations

1. Value people
We value people generally and specifically. Generally, we value people with honor, respect, dignity, love, and care, as all people are made in God's image and possess inherent value as persons (Genesis 1:27).

We value people specifically through training, education, and development. Training is focused on building people up to do the best job they can, reach full competency, and perform optimally in their job roles. Education goes beyond job training and includes understanding why your role and the roles of others are important and how they valuably contribute to and align with the organization's overall purpose. Development is centered around guiding people to fulfill their full potential, personally and professionally.

2. Build up Good Places in the Community
Good Place organizations build up Good Places in the communities where we live, serve, and work. Through the work they do, the business they are in, the products and services they provide, the skills they develop, and the methods and tools they use, organizations can make the world a better place and build up hearts of love and lives of shalom. When we view our work as God intended it to be (as a means of grace, a spiritual, sacred act that impacts ourselves and others and makes the world a better place), we create and build up Good Places for people to experience.

3. Be Economically Regenerative

Good Place organizations are economically regenerative, meaning the organization is financially viable and sustainable. Surplus resources (time, talent, treasure) are used to invest—or reinvest—to enhance health, growth, innovation, improvement, and multiplication. In short, Good Place organizations exist not to stockpile wealth but rather to invest in valuing more people and building up more Good Places.

Garry Miles

The Good Place Institute welcomes a new member to its staff: Garry Miles!

Garry will serve as GPI Business & Community Development. One of the primary purposes of the role will be to provide clients, the organizational community, and the marketplace with awareness of, interest in, and engagement with The Good Place Institute, including our products, services, and solutions to help build up and multiply Good Place organizations.

Garry has a biblical background and a family lineage in church and pastoral ministry. He followed in his family’s footsteps by attending bible college, becoming a pastor of a church, and teaching at the college level. After serving 13 years in these roles, he felt God was leading him to apply his background to a business setting where he saw a gap between the church and society.

His ministry relationship with Jim Brangenberg (GPI Certified Community Partner and co-host of the top-rated faith and work podcast, iWork4Him) led him to discuss GPI with Chris more. What resonated with Garry the most about GPI is that we “believe in the purpose of making good places.” After much prayer and leaning on God to continue opening doors, Garry joined GPI.

Garry lives in Utah with his wife and four children. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, playing sports, and is interested in establishing more good places.

Welcome Garry

According to a recent study, employees feel that having an impactful purpose in their organizations needs significant improvement. 82% of respondents believe it’s important for an organization to have a clear purpose, but only 42% say their organization’s purpose drives actual impact. At GPI, we firmly believe that having a meaningful purpose in an organization is the best way to drive impact and make the world a better place. You can read more about the McKinsey Organizational Purpose Study here.
